During WWII, Mare Island's military and civilian workforce came together to raise almost $76 million in war bonds – enough to pay for every submarine built at the shipyard. They did it with style too, rallying bond sales through the Mare Island “Follies” – lively vaudeville meets Bob Hope USO style shows, featuring live dance bands, slapstick comics, and the occasional Hollywood star.
